I went to the HL in Gilroy CA to see if there is anything in there I would like to give for Christmas. The only preconceived notion I had was that this was a Christian company that got an exemption from the AHCA. It was a huge brightly lit store with what appeared to be a cross of Michael's and Pier 1 Imports merchandise. The common thread seemed to be what I would call "Christian Patriotism". However, when I looked carefully at the merchandise it was all made in China. Selling Chinese made signs that say "Home" with an outline of the US where the "m" would be, but it is made in China. This seems deceitful and an embarrassment to the buyer.

It was really very interesting. The usual hobbies like model trains and remote control cars were absent but there were all these stamps of American and Christian looking things all made in China. There were lots of ribbons and decorative items. Nothing looked sustainable and made from reused or recycled materials. There were all these 50% off tags on items with a bunch of exclusions written below. The marked price before the discount was about doubled, especially for Chinese knock offs. There was this bizarre music on the speakers too, like shuffling my grandpa's record collection.

I bought some sticker lettering and a couple bottles for some sea glass my wife is working on and at the register they don't scan the barcode they type it in and then apply the discount that they remember. Well, she keyed in the wrong number and was charging me .39 for something, so she had to call a manager over and void the entire transaction and start again. How do they do inventory for such a large store with 10's of thousands of items?

You know when you go to a foreign country like France or Mexico or whatever and you walk around their market and you trip on how different they do things? Like the underlying concept of selling goods and services is the same but how they went about doing it evolved differently and you wonder what were the evolutionary influences that made it become what you experience. It is like that at HL as well. I've never been to Oklahoma, but now I wonder if that is how the market has evolved in that state or in that part of the country.

The first problem is the "Christian" owners and their underhanded business dealings. People think that if you put "Christian" on something, it automatically is somehow better than something not so divinely blessed!

Their stores are generally staffed with rude employees that don't know much. They don't use scanners (must be the work of the devil) and this makes it difficult to get pricing correct.

I try my best to never step foot in their store unless they carry something I can't get elsewhere, but so far I have been pretty lucky and haven't had to patronize them. One bit of advice....if you see a company with the word "Christian" attached to it, run as fast as you can in the other direction!
